  • Internal restoration to the main building of Jamaica College has now begun following a series of activities to raise funds for much needed repairs.  The primary fundraising activity, organised by the old boys' association, is the current sale by of limited edition prints reproduced from an original painting of the building by artist Joanne Sibley. Ms Sibley, was commissioned by the school in 1997. The Jamaica College main building was constructed in the Victorian Gothic Revival style in 1885, and is unique among high schools in Jamaica. However, this century-old Hope Road landmark has sustained visible damage, particularly to its roof, in recent years.
  • An additional fundraising project spearheaded by past student, Michael Bernard, has earmarked $635,000. This recent injection of funds has facilitated the current repair project. According to Jamaica College principal, Stuart Reeves, the first phase of restoration will begin with stripping and resealing the concrete roof section above the stairwell and corridors. Decades of old paint that is thick and holding firmly to the walls, will be removed in order that walls can be sealed and painted afresh. All electrical fixtures are to be repaired or replaced and fans put into classrooms. Bathrooms will receive new floor tiles, wall tiles, face basins and toilets. The principal added that several sixth form students are involved in working on the project for which they will earn a small salary.
  • Old boys wishing to purchase prints of the main building may contact Roger Chang at roger@cwjamaica.com. Prints are $3,000 unframed and $5,000 framed.  Additional donations toward the restoration of the main building may also be made to Roger Chang. All alumni are asked to note the fundraising event of the year, the Carlton Alexander Awards, to be held  on Thursday, November 4, 1999 at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel.
