THE HERBERT EDWARDS RESOURCE CENTRE

As you may know, the J.C. School Library has not been able to keep pace in the acquisition of new and replacement books, and with modern technology.  Despite the efforts of the Librarian, the collection of reference books, literature and magazines has been steadily falling behind recognized standards.

In order to provide this project with a focus, and to give the present and future students a sense of the History of J.C. in the 1940's to 1960's, we proposed that the Library be named in honour of the late Mr. Herbert C. Edwards, B.A., M.A. (J.C. 1939-1947) The Board of Governors of Jamaica College has agreed to our request and the Library is to be called The Herbert C. Edwards Resource Centre.

Mr. Edwards was School captain in 1947. After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree at McGill University in Montréal in 1951, he returned to Jamaica to teach. After a brief stint at Beckford and Smith High School (now St. Jago) he took up a position as English Master at J.C. in 1953. During the course of his distinguished career he moulded the minds of almost a generation of J.C. boys. He is fondly remembered by hundreds of students for teaching the joys of English Literature, as well as the finer points of Grammar. His knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication will never be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to come under his influence. He imparted a keen sense of the proper use of the English language, as well as a lasting respect for discipline, order and decorum. His vast knowledge of English Literature was also unstintingly imparted to his students, many of whom can still quote soliloquies from Shakespeare, or verses of Tennyson to illustrate a particular situation!

He was also Housemaster of Scotland House and in his latter days at J.C., held the reins of Cowper House. He also served, on occasion as Deputy Headmaster. Mr. Edwards obtained his Master’s Degree from the University of Alberta in Education Administration in 1964, and returned to J.C. He then went on to be the Principal of Manning’s High School in Jamaica. After moving to Winnipeg, Canada, in the late 1960's, he became the Principal of a High School there. He was later seconded by Canadian University Service Overseas (CUSO), to assist in setting up educational systems in Third World countries. Indeed, it was during such an assignment to St. Lucia in September 1991, that his untimely death occurred.
